Green Up Your Clean Up
When I moved and needed to supply my new house with cleaning and other household supplies, I insisted on choosing eco-friendly options, to protect not only the environment but also myself and loved ones.
According to the Environmental Working Group, “fumes from some cleaning products on the American market may induce asthma in otherwise healthy individuals,” and “children born to women who held cleaning jobs while pregnant have an elevated risk of birth defects, according to a 2010 study by the New York State Department of Health.” Cleaning products in the US may contain carcinogenic impurities or preservatives that release cancer-causing formaldehyde. They may also cause chemical burns and poisonings, irritations, and allergies. Additionally, many common cleaning items are made with or contained in plastic or other substances that end up in landfills or even our oceans.
To “green up your clean up,” I recommend a three-pronged approach: 1) cleaning solutions made with non-toxic and eco-friendly ingredients; 2) containers and tools made with biodegradable, metal or fibrous materials rather than plastic; and 3) refillable containers.
